Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology

This has artefacts from all over the world. It was founded in 1884. It is one of the most important collections in this area in the UK. The oldest object is a 1.8 million year old stone tool. It houses a large collection of objects from the voyages of Captain James Cook and Fiji.

See the Iron Age ‘Fire Dog’, human skull made with shells, Egyptian hedgehog amulet and an X-ray of Ibis Mummy. Or a soul-washer’s badge and model of a man smoking a pipe while carrying gunpowder from Ghana. There is a snakes and ladders board from India, Samurai Armour from Japan and a Crocodile Mask from Torres Strait.
